How each odds format works
Decimal odds show your total return per £1 staked, stake included. A £10 bet at 2.50 returns £25 — £15 profit plus your £10 back. They are the easiest format for comparing prices, which is why odds comparison sites default to them.
Fractional oddsshow profit only. 3/2 means £3 profit for every £2 staked, so £10 returns £25 — the same price as 2.50 decimal. “Evens” (1/1) is decimal 2.00.
American odds are built around $100. A positive number (+150) is the profit on a $100 stake. A negative number (-110) is what you must stake to profit $100. Anything between -100 and +100 is not a valid price.
What implied probability tells you
Implied probability is simply 1 ÷ decimal odds, expressed as a percentage. Odds of 2.50 imply a 40% chance. It is the quickest way to judge whether a price looks fair: if you believe the real chance is better than the implied figure, the bet has value.
Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and you will get more than 100%. That excess is the bookmaker's margin — the reason shopping for the best price on each selection matters so much.
